Blain, Gus, and Leo silently made their way toward the lost pet sanctuary. The terrain shifted from thick forest to an area filled with rows of small, empty houses. Then, not too far in the distance, they spotted the animal sanctuary.
An older couple sat on a rickety old park bench, flipping through several stacks of crinkly papers. Blain gasped, stopped, and let out a small howl.
“What’s the problem now?” Gus asked.
“You do realize that today could be the last day we see one another?” Blain said.
“Isn’t that what you wanted?” Leo asked.
“Well, I do want to see my human again, but I really like both of you. If I’d never met either one of you, who knows what would’ve happened to me? It would’ve been so scary. You both made this time somewhat fun.”
“Blain, I have a confession. I don’t have a human anymore. She dropped me off here, kissed me on the beak, and wished me well. She was old and was probably dying.” Leo looked down at the ground. “Maybe your human would let me come too.”
“If my human lets you,” Blain said with a sigh.
Leo smiled.
Then the two older humans sitting on the park bench started calling to the three animals.
“Get over here!” they shouted.
Blain gulped.
